How To Help Someone Grieving

If you love someone who is grieving, you may feel helpless.

Here is how you can help me:

You want to say the right thing.

You want to make the pain go away.
You want to help.

But grief is not a problem to solve.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do is simply stay.

Listen More Than You Speak

You do not need to have the perfect words.

Listen to understand me, not to quickly respond to me.

Listen to my stories.
Listen to my silence.
Listen to my tears.

You do not have to fix me.
You only have to let me know I am not alone.

Remember My Loved One

Please do not be afraid to say their name.

Memories matter.

Tell me your stories.
Share a photo.
Say, "I was thinking of them today."

You are not reminding me of my loss.

I have not forgotten.

You are reminding me that my loved one mattered.

Be Patient With My Grief

Some days I may laugh.

Some days I may cry.

Some days I may do both within the same hour.

Grief does not follow a schedule.

Please do not rush my healing or expect me to return to who I was before.

Loss changes us.

Patience is one of the greatest gifts you can give.

Show Up

You do not need grand gestures.

A text.
A meal.
A walk.
A hug.
A quiet moment beside me.

Small acts of kindness often mean the most.

Most of All...

Walk beside me.

Do not try to pull me out of grief.

Do not stand on the sidelines waiting for me to be "better."

Walk beside me while I learn to carry what I have lost.

That is how you help me.

And that is more than enough.
